the history

TAMV started in 2014 after Autumn Perkins (We Need Justice Too) put a call out regarding homicides of black people getting solved in Pittsburgh. At the time Fawn Walker-Montgomery was on McKeesport City Council and Mae Herriott Hudson just lost her son. TAMV had meetings in McKeesport and noted that people were coming from throughout the Mon Valley”. Therefore, TAMV was created with co-founders Mae Herriott Hudson and Fawn Walker-Montgomery.

The Mon Valley section of Western P.A is centrally located outside the City of Pittsburgh in Allegheny County. While it sits around the City of Pittsburgh the county has 130 self-governing municipalities. Therefore, the Mon Valley is often overlooked, ignored and forgotten.

Even though most areas in the Mon Valley have populations of less than 21,000 they rank high in crime. In 2017, the largest area in the Mon Valley, McKeesport had 13 homicides.

According to Department of Education Civil Rights Data, public discipline data that the districts submitted to PA Dept. of Education exhibited that in 2017-18 school year :

McKeesport Expulsions: 68% Black | 26% White

Out-of-school Suspensions: 71% Black

East Allegheny Expulsions: 61.5% Black

In-school suspensions: 50% Black

Out-of-school suspensions: 57% Black
